Sadharanikaran Model of Communication
Sadharanikaran Model of Communication
This model is derived from Hindu Poetics. the model is mainly cconnectd to aesthetics, poetics and drama. The base is rooted in Natyashastra. According to Vatsyayan 1996,p.146, Bhattanayaka introduced the concept of Sadharanikaran.
The model's name is derived from the sanskrit word "Sadharan". The translations are presented in Vedantatirtha 1936,p.35 as Generalized presentation, in Yadava, 1998, p. 187 as Simplification and Dissanayake, 2006, p.4 as Universalization. This model is associated to the cocnept of "Sahridayata". Sahridayata is the feeling of oneness/commonness. Hence, Sadharanikaran is the attainment of Sahridayata between two communicating parties.
The latin word "Comunis" and "communication" mean close to Sadharanikaran (Adhikary 2003, pp. 82-83). The characteristics and the philosophy behind Sadharanikaran are somewhat different from communication concept as developed in the western societies." (Yadava, 1998, p. 187). The study of Hindu/Indian theory of communication dates back to 5 decades.
This was initiated from publish of an article by Dr. Nirmala Mani Adhikari on January 13th 2003. This is based on Bhaaratmuni's Natyashastra and Vakyapadi, Sadharanikaran model of communication was presented. The first ever model of communication that was presented from the east was this which is the only model that represents the hindu perspective on communication till date.

The elements of the model are:
1. Sahridayas (Preshaka and Prapaka)
2. Bhava (Moods or emotions)
3. Abhivyanjana (Expression or encoding)
4. Sandesha (Message or information)
5. Sarani (Channel)
6. Rasaswadana (Firstly receiving, decoding and interpreting the message and finally achieving the rasa.)
7. Doshas (Noises)
8. Sandarbha (Context)
9. Pratikriya (Feedback)
In conclusion, this is a non-linear model of communication. This shows the possibility of succcessful communication in society like Hindu society. The relationship is more significant then the cause of relationship in this model of communication. This model concentrates more on Interpersonal and Intrapersonal activities. Here, communication is boarder enough to deal with all the three dimensions of life : adhibhautika (physical or mundane), adhidaivika (mental) and adhvatmika (spiritual). All in all, just as hinduism always emphasizes to achieve all of the purushartha chatustayas, (i.e. four goals of life: artha, kama, dharma and moksha ) the model also concieves communication capable of attaining all these goals. Thus, the model is in perfect resonance with the Hindu world view.
